Which comes first: Finger foods or spoon?
What came first the finger or spoon. Depends on who you ask. The baby says throw away the spoon just give me my food. Mum says keep things clean and tidy and learn manners from an early age. Mum also wants to be in charge. Now define food, then define finger food. Food is generally taken to mean anything eaten for nourishment. Finger food then is food that his held and eaten. While items such as teething rusks are used by babies from about six months, the question is are they a food or simply a teething aid. The introduction to solids generally starts with foods such as rice cereal or pureed fruit. By its very nature these are spoon fed foods. Being a sloppy somewhat gooey mess, this food is difficult for baby to handle. Whilst babies have a very well coordinated hand to mouth skill, the texture of any hand food is too solid for babies to chew or digest until around nine months. I know some mothers buy special stockings that allow babies to chew on solids without getting any of the solid particles in their mouths. This is not feeding. This is taste testing and aids teething. It is not until around seven to nine months that babies are able to start chewing on hand held foods and these are generally rusks or dried fingers of bread. Again, these are more for teething than eating. Some babies are able to handle finger foods at this age but not all. At around 12 months babies are able to chew on small pieces of food such as bananas, bread, biscuits, chips and vegetables. However, by 12 months most babies have been eating from a spoon for a good four to five months with the amounts and texture changing to suit baby. During this time the baby may well try to feed themselves, some more successfully than others, but it is still spoon feeding, not finger foods. The real introduction to food comes from the spoon. In reality, the real introduction to food comes from the plate of mum or dad in the form of mashed potato, or mashed vegetables. |
