Should Parents Raise Their Children Without Television?
A question like this implies that there is something inherently wrong with television. Television has both positive and negative aspects to it. It is however, our perceptions and the use of television that is the actually causing any problems. Television can be a great teaching tool. It can also be a great short term baby sitter, but only short term. Where television starts to cause problems is when the content is not monitored and when it is used as a long term baby sitter. I have four children under five and the three older ones have all either learnt their ABC's, 123's, nursery rhymes and certain social skills through the television or it has reinforced what we have taught them. There needs to be a balance. I have often heard that all television programs should be viewed with a parent in attendance. For the child, this can represent an invasion of 'their' time. There are programs that a child can watch loosely supervised. They enjoy these programs, particularly in the company of other children. There are also programs they enjoy in the company of adults wither because they can show of their newly acquired skills or because of the interaction with parent. Television is a medium that is here to stay. Rather than forcing children to do without, we should be teaching them how to use responsibly. To use if for entertainment, education and news delivery. We should also be teaching them how to be judicious in their selection of program materials. Television is not the problem - parents are. |
