How To Teach Your Pubescent Son To Be A Man
First define a man. If you mean macho "I'm a man" type man - forget it. They either have it or they don't. If you mean your typical everyday type of man, again forget. If you wait until they are pubescent it is to late. The best education any child can receive, male or female, is from a role model.Becoming a man is (or woman) is a strange transition. For me people around them it may seem an overnight occurrence. For others it seems to take for ever. Boys need role models. This is particularly difficult in single parent families where the primary care giver is the mother. Our education system does not help given there are so few male teachers, particularly in the early years. As a society it is also difficult to find sportsmen who can be relied on as role models, more so now that the media examines every major sports star with a microscope. Given these circumstances, particularly for single mothers, the child, from a young age, needs to be associated with at least one good role model. This can be a grandfather, uncle or just a good friend. Some associations like the Boy Scout movement can also provide role models. If the child has not been exposed to good role models then the transition from childhood through the teens to adulthood can be difficult. The transition can be made easier by providing links to male company through sporting activities and a variety of associations. If you do need to coach a pubescent male through to adulthood, in other words teach him to be a man, it needs to be done with tact, timing and sensitivity. The one thing that should never be done is to point out the shortcomings. Rather, emphasis should be placed on the positives. They need to be talked through relationship issues, career options and social expectations. The harsh reality is that in this day and age, the question should be, "how can a pubescent son teach their parent's that they are now becoming a man". |
