How To Gain Your Children's Cooperation In Performing Chores
One of the easiest ways to gain your child's cooperating in performing chores is to make it as much fun as the situation or chore allows. My kids love to sing and dance so we make up songs and dance around whenever we can. Of course this is not always practical, but you would be surprised at where and when you can. The other tactic I use is to put in a teaser. I start doing the chore alone. I ask them if they would like to help. If they don't want to I agree and play little word games with comments related to how yukky the chore is and understanding why they don't want to do. At the same time I throw in some of the positives and undermine the yukkies. On the other hand, if they say they do want to help, I again hold off and go through some of the yukkies involved with the task. By now it is a game and they are almost begging to help out. The worst thing that any parent can do is turn the chore into a nightmare that must be done or else. Children grow to resent the chore and will start to find avenues to escape them. Make the chores fun; make them inviting; they will come in droves. Make them a nightmare; make them a drag; they will avoid them as much as possible. Chores need to be started as young as possible. Chores should also be appropriate for the age group. Finally, chores need to be divided up evenly. One thing I avoid is a timetable or chores list for each child. I delegate the chores on an adhoc spur of the moment basis. If you schedule the chores, you are providing the child with time to think about the chore, what they don't like about it and how to avoid it. Schedules can be taught in many other ways - you don't need the chore list to teach it. Make sure you are involved with the chores and that the chores are a lot of fun. Doing chores together can be valuable time spent together. |
