Feeding your baby: Breast or bottle?
So you're getting ready to have a baby. Congratulations! Now here comes the hard part. You need to decide what to feed your baby. If you have the choice, would you prefer to feed your newborn formula that is just satisfactory? Or would you prefer to give her premium formula that offers a host of health benefits for both your baby and you? Let's do a quick and easy breakdown of the two formula types. Formula A, the satisfactory food, requires a lot of work. You have to measure formula, mix it with the right amount of water, and warm it just right. You have to burp your baby frequently during feedings (have that burp cloth handy), clean bottles a lot, and be very careful not to leave it out for long. When you leave the house, you have to be sure you have enough on hand. One benefit is that your baby will sleep for longer stretches of time. Formula B, the premium formula, also requires work. It's pre-made though, it's packed with immune boosting ingredients, it's proven to be the healthiest drink for your baby, and you don't have to heat it. Your baby won't need frequent burping, and while you might have bottles to clean, this formula can be left out for several hours without going bad. On the downside, you might have to spend a lot of time with your baby because this formula gets digested very quickly. Your baby may seem to be perpetually hungry. But on the plus side, dirty diapers have a fairly pleasant odor, unlike Formula A's by-product. It's also very portable and replenishes automatically, almost like magic. No need to worry about bringing enough when you're out on the town. How much do you think the two formulas cost? You might be surprised to find out that the premium formula, Formula B, is completely free! Formula A is quite expensive, on the other hand. Amazing! Of course I'm talking about formula feeding versus breastfeeding. Barring physical or medical problems, it's pretty clear that human milk (Formula B), is best for newborn humans. It's interesting to me that people still believe that formula is just as good when they have the option. Many of those same people prefer premium coffee, name brand clothes, 5-star restaurants, high-quality cars, and more. Maybe they choose formula over breastfeeding because formula costs more, and in this society, more money usually equals better quality. Maybe it's time for breastfeeding advocates to sell high-cost breastpumps, name brand nursing bras and nursing gear, and designer breastfeeding diaper bags. It's time to start breaking down the real value of breastfeeding in dollars and cents. Perhaps if breastfeeding becomes a money-making industry it can start to compete with the formula pushers. Here's hoping. |
